In a stunning display of Romneycare, Mitt Romney’s son, Josh, says he lifted four people out of a car that crashed into a home late Thursday night after celebrating Thanksgiving. He !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with the not-so-candid picture, and later sent a written statement to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :
“Last night, after Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and family, I drove with my wife and children to my home. We exited I-215 South at 4500 South and came to a stop at the intersection. Just then, a vehicle traveling at highway speed passed narrowly by my car, through the intersection and into the kitchen of a home across the street.
I drove to the accident site and entered the home where the car had come to a stop on its side. I opened the car door and spoke with the four passengers inside the car. Miraculously, they appeared to have no major injuries. I was able to help each of them get out of the car and lift them down to the ground.
My family and I are grateful that no one was seriously injured and glad to have been able to help those affected by this terrible accident. What I did to help the people involved in the accident is what anyone else would do who witnessed such a potentially dangerous situation.”
While the lack of pupils in his eyes suggests not having a soul, his actions certainly suggest otherwise. Rescuing people from a wrecked car is commendable. But the juxtaposition of the wreckage while smiling like a tourist at Disneyworld just seems kind of awkward. Regardless, nice work, Josh. Now work on your Twitter-Fu, your humblebrag is showing.

If I pulled four people from a car that ended up on its side in a kitchen after almost hitting my car, and everyone was basically ok, I would take a picture and post jt on the internets too. I fail to see what the issue is. Not everyday that this happens in my life at least.

Meh. Most people would do the same.
Earlier this year I "rescued" several drivers who were trapped in snow. The area was completely snowbound for a few days so I made them comfortable in my house, opened a couple of good whiskies, cooked what food I had left, and put on some movies. (Misery, Fargo, The Shining, Dr Zhivago &c). I think any other civilised human would try to help if they could; why not?
(I'm the gentleman in yellow and black)
Of course I put it on Facebook, complete with photos - it was a good adventure. Of all the social networking sins, being proud of helping others is probably the smallest.

This has almost nothing to do with politics, you buffoon. The Romney son just happens to be a person who only seems to do good deeds so they can brag about it on social media. Just because he happens to be a Romney doesn't necessarily mean that the author is trying to make any sort of opinion on Romneys or Republicans.

It's the picture that makes him a jackass. One family has just had its home destroyed, another has lost its car and survived a traumatic accident (I'll reserve judgment on the driver since we don't know the details), and here's Mighty White smiling while posing amid the wreckage. He's insensitive at best, coming off as self-absorbed and vain, rather than concerned about the people affected by this accident. He could have posted a picture without him mugging like a trophy hunter if he wanted to share this dramatic incident with his friends.

Typical Gawker nonsense in the comments. Not surprised.
I do not vote based on parties, but I tend to have conservative values - so I rarely vote Democrat. But when Tom Barrett (Milwaukee's mayor) tried to stop a man from beating a woman with a pipe and ended up being beat up himself - I respected the guy for doing what was right no matter what the cost.
Does it mean I voted for him? No. But I respected him more as a person. I'm not sure why there is any difference here for those of you who don't like this man's (father's) political leaning.
Politicians are still humans. (Those who help people in bad situations prove it, do they not?)
I don't particularly care for a lot of things about the Romneys, but this is a good thing that Josh did here.
The fact that he smiled for a photo is evidence that he has been in photos before. And the fact is ... this had a happy outcome all things considered ... are you all saying you wouldn't smile in a similar situation? Is a frown or stern face more appropriate?

If you have to say "Hey, look at me being a good person over here", it's most likely because you're not otherwise. For example, the Romneys made no donations to charity (unless you consider the Mormon church a charity, I don't) until a few years before he ran for president. Then during the election, he made a higher donation in dollar amount than Obama, but less as a percentage of his wealth. That tells me all I need to know.

Bragging about "good deeds" negates the purpose of just doing something because of your own conviction as far as I am concerned. There is no need to broadcast doing something good for other people, but if the receiving person wants to make a big deal about it, then whatever. Again, only my opinion, but the people I have seen who brag about their positive actions on are usually the same people I considered to be pillocks long before that point.

Ah... the indignation of the self-righteous.
Unless if you had a hand in helping these people out, I don't think anyone has the right to criticize Romney Jr. for his little "photo-op"
Unless if it was truly staged (which would take a hefty dose of partisan conspiracy-mongering in order to seem plausible).
I would wager that for a certain portion of the commenters (and even the author), the "criticism" stems not so much from what Junior did, but rather what his last name is, and what that represents (in the eyes of some people, at least)

I never said any of that: "negates the purpose of just doing something because of your own conviction" is what I said and states that the person doing the good deed did it with an assumption of praise either beforehand or after the fact. My response said to do good things as you are convicted to do so, but keep them to yourself. It's simple, human decency - living life without expectation, doing positive things, and moving on. The end.

You aren't making a hell of a lot of sense. You want to write your own narrative make your own comment. I never associated with a political party, I never claimed to be a democrat. I vote for who will do the most for me, not a party. I made a fairly passive non affiliated comment and was attacked personally for it. So I attacked in kind. Don't try to be some white knight when you aren't.

So, all things considered, would you rather he be "convicted" to tell them to fuck off and keep driving? Or to be "convicted" to help the victims out, regardless of intent?
It seems most are assuming he did it just for praise. Making people aware of a good deed you did may take some of the luster off of a "selfless act," but it doesn't mean he wouldn't have helped out if he didn't have a camera phone there to document the situation.
I dislike the Romneys. I don't like what they stand for, what they believe in, how they go about their business. But attacking for something like this just wreaks of bullshit political bantering.

He shouldn't have publicized it. Period. That is where it stops. I don't care who his daddy is or what his political affiliation or popularity with the public may or may not be. Him helping someone out is great, but broadcasting it saying "Look at me! I did something awesome!" Is tacky and stupid. If his wife or someone he helped out had done so, then that's great. Him posting it on his own reeks of arrogance, which is his right if he wants to be that way, but as I said is very tacky and egocentric.
Keep your mind off the political jargon with me though, please. I have no political affiliation whatsoever and as long as career politicians exist, will remain that way. The only reference I make is that he is somewhat of a public figure affiliation. It would not matter if he were so in a political sense, entertainment, or royalty. Arrogance doesn't discriminate.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have kept his mouth shut, but the fact is that he stopped when most would not have. Any motivation beyond that is an assumption, either way.

Apparently you missed where I said "most likely" and "most people". There's always a grey area, I'm not denying that.

You're correct, I misread that...my apologies. I still think that nearly everyone exists in that grey area, though. Altruism is a nice thought, but nearly everyone has a "selfish" motive one way or another.

When you help others, they tend to pay it forward. And when you do things to help society as a whole, it benefits everyone, including you. So yes, you could say there's a selfish element, obviously you have to look out for yourself, but you don't have to do so at the expense of others.
